St Nicholas Church, which dates from the 13th Century, was badly damaged during the battle. The 15th Century tower remains a landmark across Otmoor, visible for miles around. Islip developed as an important staging post on the main Oxford to Worcester coaching route—reputedly Islip boasted 22 pubs, but the building of the Oxford Canal in 1790 led to a decline in the village’s importance.
